Dialysis GranuFlo Information

The kidneys serve the body as a natural filter of the blood.  They remove wastes which are then diverted to the bladder. In producing urine, the kidneys excrete wastes such as urea and ammonium, and they are also responsible for the re-absorption of water, glucose, and amino acids. Chronic kidney failure (or renal failure), a condition that affects approximately 400,000 Americans, occurs when the kidneys cease to function in filtering waste from the blood. As a result, people suffering from renal failure must undergo dialysis, which is the process of cleansing the blood by passing it through a special machine. There are two main types of dialysis, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis becomes necessary when the kidneys are not able to filter the blood, allowing patients with kidney failure a chance to live productive lives.

Fresenius Injury Problems

Fresenius Medical Care North America, which manufactures both GranuFlo® and NaturalLyte®, two products used in the hemodialysis treatment process, recently admitted that both products have been shown to cause alkalosis, a condition associated with an increase in cardiovascular death and catastrophic cardiovascular injuries in patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment. Such injuries include cardiovascular death, sudden cardiac death, cardiopulmonary arrest, as well as heart attack. Fresnius treats more than one-third of the estimated 400,000 dialysis patients in the United States. Fresenius Medical Care is the largest provider of dialysis products and services in the United States, according to their website.

An internal company memo from November 2011 indicates Fresnius was awares that patients Granuflo® had a chance of death from cardiopulmonary arrest six times greater than when using other dialysis products.
